Dogs

Currently there are 4 permanent residents at WoodHaven. The dogs have their own Dog Log Cabin and an acre of fenced yard and woods and ravine in which to romp. They spend days napping in the sunshine, playing tug, chasing butterflies and each other, and splashing in their own trough pool.

When Susan has office work, the dogs are stretched out at her feet inside the house. But for safety, when she is in the barn, the dogs head to their own log cabin and spend that time having a blast. Most evenings, the dogs are snuggled in with their human – but there are times when the dogs prefer to be OUTSIDE in their own house. Their cabin is heated in the winter and cooled in the summer. These pampered pooches have it made!

*Due to space requirements and behavioral issues of our current dogs, we are on a case by case basis for the intake of new dogs.

Rosie

Rosie came to the farm in July 2020 as a very pregnant, very thin, terrified young dog.  She had truly given up on humans, as she had been starved and abused. Rosie arrived on a Friday afternoon, weighing less than 30 pounds.  She delivered 12 puppies three days later.  One pup was stillborn, but the 11 surviving pups THRIVED on her great care. The vet was concerned with her lack of nutrition and how grossly underweight she was, however, with lots of TLC and proper nutrition, Rosie was able to produce enough milk for all 11 puppies.

All puppies stayed at WoodHaven until they were weaned and had learned life lessons from Rosie. Only then, were perfect homes found for the puppies. Annually at WoodHaven, we have a Rosie Reunion, where all of the pups can play with their Mom Rosie and siblings – and it is a joyful event!

Once Rosie gained weight and was healthy, she turned into the most loving and thankful dog.  She now weighs 45 pounds and loves playing with her pack members.  She has become quite the couch potato, and is always by Susan’s side.  Rosie and one puppy, Brutus, now call WoodHaven their permanent home.

Brutus

Sweet BIG Brutus was one Rosie’s puppies. Rosie was still a puppy herself when she delivered her pups, and Brutus was HUGE from birth. Once eyes were opened and the puppies all were mobile and active, it quickly became evident that Brutus suffered from severe FEAR of everything. This type of fear in dogs can transfer to aggression, and based on what was best for Brutus, it was decided he stay with Rosie where he could always feel safe. Brutus is flourishing with his pack, although still is terrified when alone. Thankfully, the pack spends most of the time together, living the BEST DOG LIFE ever. For his size, Brutus is a gentle and calm giant, who thinks he is supposed to be a lap dog.

Moose

Moose was originally rescued because he was born without toes on one of his front paws. This club foot is significantly shorter than his other front leg, which means he walks with a constant limp. Moose’s first rescue owners loved him very much. But they were new parents, and recognized as a large dog (over 100 pounds!), he needed more training and time than they could offer. Moose fit seamlessly into the WoodHaven Pack, and he and Tank are inseparable. He LOVES swimming in his pool. And then promptly rolling in the dirt. He is a sweetheart of a boy.

Sable

Sable was brought by the vet to Susan when she was not quite 4 weeks old. Her mother stopped producing milk, and most of the puppies in the litter didn’t survive. Sable had some touch and go moments, but ultimately grew into an 85 pound, healthy lab mix gal. Unfortunately, because Sable had no mother during the formative puppy weeks, she exhibits a lot of fear. Since fear can manifest as aggression, Sable is most comfortable when she is around people she knows or among her dog pack.
