Our Story

Our Story

WoodHaven Rescue Farm technically started in 2001 in Charlotte, Tennessee.  Susan Whaley and her husband Gary purchased 22 acres, built their home and barns, and rescued several animals over twelve years.  Susan was a licensed wildlife rehabilitator in Kentucky, and worked with Veterinarian practices to take in and foster injured and orphaned wildlife. Susan and Gary also took in foster dogs, stray cats, poultry, rabbits, parrots, ponies, and donkeys.

Unfortunately, Susan was widowed in 2014.  She moved back to her hometown of Lafayette Indiana to grieve and heal, and be close to family.  As always, she found great comfort in the unconditional love of animals. She moved to Indiana with dogs, cats and horses….and once she built her barn, quickly added more rescue/foster/orphan animals in need.

Susan has more than 50 years experience working with a variety of animals. The goal with WoodHaven Rescue Farm is to offer safe haven for those needing socialization, rehabilitation, respite and retirement. Susan specializes in elderly end of life care, as well as nursing orphaned newborns through weaning. Some of the permanent residents have behavioral issues due to abuse or non – socialization, as well as chronic and debilitating medical conditions that aren’t conducive to adoption.

Volunteers needed!

WoodHaven Rescue Farm would not be able to exist without our amazing volunteers.
