Mini Horses and Mini Mules

All of the minis currently at WoodHaven Rescue Farm came from a great home, and they were well loved and spoiled. Unfortunately, their owner passed away and they needed to find a safe forever home.

Most miniature horses and ponies (as well as a lot of horses) are not able to live in a lush green pasture. Horses can overeat and develop serious metabolic conditions which can be life threatening. For their safety, they are kept on ‘dry lots’ and given good quality dry hay. This prevents them from suffering from things like founder, colic, laminitis, and other dangerous and painful conditions. It takes a lot of time, effort and money to keep them safe – daily poop scooping to keep their lots clean, extra vet visits to keep teeth properly aligned, special low starch low sugar expensive feed, and frequent farrier visits to keep hooves at proper length.

These miniature critters may be small in stature, but are LARGE in personalities.

Fannie Mae

Fannie Mae (mini horse) is the sweetest gal, always wanting to be petted. She will follow you everywhere. Fannie is petite, quiet, and very content letting the other minis take center stage. Fannie is the first to whinny a welcome every time she sees people. Getting brushed and fussed over are her favorite hobbies. Manny is her son, and Freddie Mac is her younger brother.

Freddie Mac

Freddie Mac (mini horse) is the most shy of the minis. It takes a lot of time for him to warm up to people. Trying to catch Freddie can be a huge challenge, as he prefers to be a free spirit. However, once caught and haltered, Freddie turns into a calm good boy eager to please. Fannie May is his older sister.

Libby

Libby (mini mule) is the smallest of the minis, but don’t let that fool you. She is LARGE AND IN CHARGE and loves to boss her pasture mates. She can be rude, pushy, has to have things her way… it’s a good thing she’s so adorable! Libby has a big personality and you can’t help but fall in love with her. She’s mischievous and enjoys causing chaos, but makes you laugh. She brays with impatience at feeding time, and stomps her cute little hoof. Speedo is her father and Manny is her half brother.

Manny

Manny (mini mule) is as quiet as Libby is loud. He has the cutest quiet bray when he wants attention. He is very tall for being a miniature, and seeing how petite his mom and dad are, we wonder where he gets his height. Manny is learning to love butt scratches and starting to come out of his shell. Fannie Mae and Speedo are his parents.

Donkeys & Mini Donkeys

Speedo

Speedo the mini donkey is everyone’s favorite. He has been to cancer walks, Palm Sunday services, parades and other social gatherings. He LOVES people, and people love him. Speedo is always happiest when he is the center of attention. He will bray when he sees people, and never turns down pets and hugs. Sadly, Speedo is currently in liver failure from overeating when he was younger. The veterinarian staff at WoodHaven closely monitors his health with blood work every few months. He has giant fat packs along his belly and a fat neck roll called a broken crest. Nothing can reverse the damage, but we watch him to ensure he is happy and comfortable and as healthy as possible.

Casper

Casper the Friendly Donkey arrived at WoodHaven with Clover the llama in May 2022. He had been the guard donkey at the llama farm since the mid 1990s, and had not been handled much. Casper has significant hoof issues as well as metabolic issues, but he is so trusting and caring. We think he knows he is retired now and can spend his days being pampered. He is adjusting to life on a dry lot and with good dry hay, and he gobbles up his daily ‘treat’ which contains medication to ease his pain. Casper has extra deep bedding to stand in as an extra cushion if he is hurting. There are rubber mats everywhere, and he chooses when he prefers to stand/lay down on mats or in deep shavings. Casper continues to amaze us as he trusts us to work on his hooves and bathe his skin infections. He wants so badly to please us humans. He has a long way to go before his hooves are where they need to be, but he has fighting spirit and won’t give up.

There’s no way to tell how old he really is, but best “guestimate” after examining him would be well over 30 years old.

Horses

  • Aquilla

Aquilla was born in 1997. She is a sweet but shy girl, who is always at the bottom of the pecking order in the herd. She’s the smallest of the horses, but this doesn’t faze her! She suffered a bowed tendon (similar to severely sprained ankle in humans) in early 2021 and had a horrible time healing with that injury. She spent 8 months at vet barn with multiple trips to Purdue Vet clinic for surgery and repeated casts. She will always walk with a limp, but rest and occasional anti-inflammatory medications keep her happy.

  • Ransom

Ransom was born at the original WoodHaven Farm, and he grew up to be a HUGE horse! He must have been a lap dog in a previous life. Ransom will follow you everywhere, tug on shirt tails, pick up and toss buckets, and pretty much get into any and everything that isn’t secured in place... And even things that are!

  • Rufus

Rufus was a scrawny young colt Susan took in back in 1996 when she lived in Kentucky. He’s the old man of the horses, turning white in his face and losing his teeth. He loves butt scratches and carrots and apples (as long as they are cut into tiny pieces!).
